A few Pakistanis have ventured for the treatment of their loved ones to Italy: a country once known for it’s high number of thalassemia patients.
Yet, not many know about this possibility. Bone Marrow Transplant facilities are still in their infant stages in Karachi and Islamabad and virtually non existent in Lahore. Several complicated cases are refused treatment in Pakistan or referred abroad. The cost of transplantation is double if not three times in the U.K. and U.S.A., making Italy a better option for patients who can afford treatment costs.
I started the free service to educate people about bone marrow transplants and how to deal with their effects in 2010, based on my own experiences of having my daughter go through two BMTs in Italy. I sincerely hope that patients and their families can benefit from this effort.
